Strategic AI Innovation (Days 1–2)

The first two days focus on the strategic, managerial and regulatory dimensions of AI in EU funds. Participants explore how AI as real innovation transforms programme management, monitoring, reporting, fraud prevention, and audit readiness. You learn how to integrate AI into:

  • Management & Control Systems
  • Audit trails and compliance workflows
  • Risk scoring and anomaly detection
  • Performance measurement and evaluation

This part builds the strategic mindset and governance framework needed to deploy AI responsibly and effectively.

Day 1 – Introduction, Discover, Question, Control

Part 1: AI as Your Professional Partner — While You Stay in Command

Theme: Understanding how AI can support applications, assessment, selection and verifications EU Funds.

Learning focus:

Participants discover how AI can assist professionals without replacing professional judgement. The central message is:

“AI advises. Humans decide. Humans remain accountable.”

Teams act as potential beneficiaries / applicants ESI Funds, IPA Funds, Migration and Security Funds ((AMIF, ISF BMVI) using AI as a partner to invest in the Future of the EU

15:30 – 17:00 | Team Challenge 2: An Application Under Pressure

Teams analyse a fictional EU-funded project application. AI is used as a partner to identify missing information, inconsistencies, risk indicators and questions for the applicant.

17:00 – 17:15 | Debrief: Stay in Command

Teams compare their findings. The trainer highlights where AI added value, where human judgement was essential, and where blind trust in AI would create risks.

Day 2 – Tighten Controls, Question the File, Uncover Hidden Risks

Theme: Using AI to strengthen controls and improve the quality of management verifications and audits.

Learning focus:

Participants learn how to use AI to review project files more critically, identify red flags and improve the audit trail.

Programme:

09:15 – 10:30 | Team Challenge 3: The Hidden Risk File

An engaging multi media presentation of an EU-funded project, putting the team’s observations, risk analyses, healthy skepticism, and teamwork to the test.

Do they, with their human intelligence, uncover the hidden risks?

The teams hold a brainstorming session and begin creating a presentation to showcase their findings.

10:15 – 10:30 | Coffee Break

10:30 – 12:30 | Team Challenge 4: AI & The Hidden Risk File

AI and Risk Analysis Dashboard

Practical very realistic exercise of how AI can support:

• risk indicators;
• anomaly detection;
• prioritisation of checks;
• selection of samples;
• audit planning;
• follow-up questions.

Each team gets a project file with documents, and AI helps them spot anomalies and analyze the content, but it’s up to the team to decide what truly matters. They create a risk heatmap for a complex project scenario, with AI lending support, and focus on identifying high-risk areas in applications, procurement, existence and expenditure, outputs, and controls.

Their findings are then added to their team presentations.

12:30 – 13:30 | Lunch

13:30 – 15:00 | What Could Be Wrong?

Teams challenge their own conclusions. They must ask:

“What would a sceptical verifier / auditor question?”

“What evidence is still missing?”

“What could break our conclusion?”

How can AI assist in answering these questions?

Their answers and findings are then added to their team presentations.

Their lessons learned will be part of the presentations

Final scores are announced. Awards are given for:

A former Senior Audit Manager at the Audit Authority of the Netherlands, he contributed to the creation of the EU/EC Anti-Fraud Knowledge Centre (launched in 2021).
